ROOT CANAL THERAPY

At Toothology Dental, root canal therapy is a routine, comfortable procedure that eliminates infection, relieves pain, and saves teeth that would otherwise need to be extracted. Dr. Alin Gorgan performs all endodontic treatment in-house — including complex molar root canals — so you get the care you need without a referral, without extra appointments, and without the anxiety that comes from starting over with a new provider.

What Is Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy is a procedure used to treat a tooth that has become infected or severely inflamed at the pulp — the soft tissue inside the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels. When bacteria reach the pulp through deep decay, a crack, or trauma, the resulting infection can cause significant pain and, if left untreated, spread to surrounding teeth and bone. Root canal therapy removes the infected tissue, cleans and seals the inside of the tooth, and allows it to remain in place rather than requiring extraction.

The procedure itself is far more comfortable than its reputation suggests. With modern anesthetic techniques and a calm, unhurried approach, most patients find root canal therapy no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. The relief from the infection that follows is almost immediate — and for many patients, the procedure marks the end of pain they’ve been managing for days or weeks.

At Toothology Dental, Dr. Gorgan performs all endodontic treatment in-house, including complex molar root canals. This means no referral to a specialist, no new office to navigate, and no break in the continuity of your care. After root canal therapy, a crown is typically placed to protect and restore the treated tooth — which Dr. Gorgan can also handle right here using our in-house milling technology for a seamless, efficient restoration.

Under One Roof

All Root Canal Treatment Performed In-House

Most general dentists refer molar root canals out to an endodontist — a specialist who works in a separate office, doesn’t know your history, and requires you to coordinate an entirely new appointment and treatment relationship. At Toothology Dental, that’s not how it works. Dr. Gorgan performs all endodontic treatment in-house, including the more technically demanding molar cases that most general practices send elsewhere. That means fewer appointments, no break in continuity, and a provider who understands your full clinical picture from the very first diagnosis through the final crown placement.

Molar root canals are considered more complex because molars have multiple roots and canals that require precise navigation — and not every general dentist has the training or confidence to handle them. Dr. Gorgan does. His comprehensive endodontic capability is a direct reflection of his commitment to building a practice where patients can access a wide range of care without being shuffled between offices. When you come to Toothology Dental with an infected tooth, you leave with a clear plan — and the knowledge that Dr. Gorgan can see it through from start to finish, right here in Charlotte.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR ROOT CANAL

The Root Canal Process at Toothology Dental

Step 1: Diagnosis & Anesthesia

Dr. Gorgan begins by evaluating the tooth with X-rays to confirm the extent of the infection and determine the best treatment approach. Once the area is fully numb with local anesthesia, the procedure begins. Most patients are surprised by how little they feel — the goal is for you to be completely comfortable before anything proceeds.

Step 2: Cleaning & Sealing

Dr. Gorgan creates a small opening in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals. The infected tissue is carefully removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned, shaped, and disinfected. The canals are then filled and sealed with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha to prevent re-infection and protect the structural integrity of the tooth going forward.

Step 3: Crown Placement

After root canal therapy, the treated tooth typically requires a crown to protect it from fracture and restore its full function. At Toothology Dental, crowns can be fabricated in-house using our Monogram Buck milling machine — allowing for precise, well-fitting restorations with fewer appointments. Dr. Gorgan will walk you through the crown process and timing during your visit.

DO YOU NEED A ROOT CANAL?

Signs You May Need Root Canal Therapy

Some patients experience obvious symptoms — severe toothache, sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the source is removed, swelling, or a visible abscess near the affected tooth. Others have little to no pain despite significant infection. The only reliable way to know whether root canal therapy is needed is an exam and X-rays with Dr. Gorgan.

If you’re experiencing any of the following, contact our office promptly: persistent toothache, prolonged sensitivity to temperature, darkening of the tooth, swelling or tenderness in nearby gums, or a recurring pimple-like bump on the gums. Waiting on these symptoms can allow an infection to spread and complicate treatment — early intervention is always the better path.

Benefits of Saving Your Tooth With Root Canal Therapy

  • Eliminates infection and pain: Removes the source of the problem and provides relief that extraction alone cannot always match for surrounding tissues
  • Preserves your natural tooth: Keeping your natural tooth avoids the bone loss and shifting that occurs when a tooth is extracted and not replaced
  • Cost-effective long-term: Root canal therapy followed by a crown is typically less costly over time than extraction and implant placement
  • No referral needed: Dr. Gorgan handles all endo in-house, including molar root canals — saving you time and extra appointments
  • Same-day crown option: In-house milling technology allows for precise crown restorations with fewer visits to complete your treatment

HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT ROOT CANAL THERAPY?

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Are root canals painful?

Root canals have a reputation for being painful, but that reputation is largely outdated. With modern local anesthesia, most patients feel little to no discomfort during the procedure itself. Any soreness in the days following treatment is typically mild and manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers. Most patients are relieved to find that the root canal ends the severe tooth pain they were experiencing — rather than causing new pain. Dr. Gorgan’s calm, unhurried approach makes the experience as comfortable as possible from start to finish.

Can I wait on a root canal if I'm not in pain?

Not all infected teeth cause obvious pain — but that doesn’t mean waiting is safe. A tooth infection can spread to surrounding bone and tissue even without significant symptoms, potentially leading to more complex treatment needs down the road. If Dr. Gorgan has recommended root canal therapy based on your exam and X-rays, it’s important to move forward in a timely manner. Delaying treatment rarely makes the situation better and often makes it more complicated and costly to address.

Is it better to get a root canal or just have the tooth extracted?

Whenever possible, saving a natural tooth is the preferred approach — and root canal therapy makes that possible in most cases. Natural teeth are generally better for your bite, jaw health, and long-term bone preservation than extracted teeth that are not replaced. Extraction followed by an implant is a viable option, but it typically involves more procedures, more time, and greater overall cost than root canal therapy and a crown. Dr. Gorgan will help you evaluate both options based on your specific situation so you can make the most informed decision for your long-term oral health.
