Same-day care
What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any situation involving pain, injury, or damage that requires prompt attention to relieve suffering, prevent infection, or save a tooth. If you’re unsure whether what you’re experiencing qualifies as an emergency, err on the side of calling us — we’d rather help you figure that out over the phone than have you wait on something that needs immediate care.
Common dental emergencies include severe or sudden toothaches, cracked or broken teeth, knocked-out teeth, lost fillings or crowns, dental abscesses, swelling or infection in the mouth or jaw, and injuries to the teeth or surrounding soft tissue. Some of these situations can worsen quickly if left untreated — which is why getting seen as soon as possible is always the right call.
At Toothology Dental, Dr. Gorgan has the clinical training and in-house capabilities to address a wide range of emergency situations — including extractions, endodontic treatment, and restorative work — so you’re not being sent from office to office when you’re already in pain. Our goal is to get you comfortable, assess what’s happening, and develop a clear plan for your care on the same visit.
Why Choosing the Right Emergency Dentist Matters
When you’re in pain, the instinct is to find anyone who can see you quickly — but who treats you matters just as much as how fast you’re seen. Many dental offices that advertise emergency care are only equipped to manage the immediate discomfort and refer you elsewhere for the actual treatment. That means more appointments, more time in pain, more coordination, and more cost. At Toothology Dental, the goal is to handle as much as possible in a single visit — because Dr. Gorgan has the surgical training and in-house capabilities to back it up.
Dr. Gorgan spent years specializing in oral surgery, performing extractions, managing complex infections, and placing implants — the kinds of procedures that come up most often in genuine dental emergencies. That background means when you call Toothology Dental with an emergency, you’re not getting a temporary fix and a referral slip. You’re getting a provider who can assess the full picture, address the immediate problem, and build a real treatment plan — all without sending you somewhere else. In a dental emergency, that difference is everything.
Steps to Take Before You Reach Our Office
Step 1: Call Us
Immediately
The first thing to do in any dental emergency is call our office. Describe what’s happening and our team will triage your situation, provide guidance on what to do in the meantime, and get you scheduled as quickly as possible — prioritizing same-day appointments for patients in acute pain or with urgent needs.
Step 2: Manage the Situation at Home
While you wait to be seen, there are steps you can take to minimize discomfort and protect the affected area. For a knocked-out tooth, keep it moist by placing it in milk or holding it between your cheek and gum. For a broken tooth, rinse with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. For pain, over-the-counter pain relievers can help in the short term.
Step 3: Come In for Emergency Treatment
When you arrive, Dr. Gorgan will evaluate your situation thoroughly to understand exactly what’s happening and what treatment is required. He’ll explain his findings and your options clearly before anything proceeds, and he’ll prioritize getting you out of pain as quickly as possible while developing a longer-term care plan if follow-up treatment is needed.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What should I do if I knock out a tooth?
Act quickly — a knocked-out tooth has the best chance of being saved if you’re seen within 30 to 60 minutes. Pick up the tooth by the crown (the chewing surface), not the root. If it’s dirty, rinse it gently with water — do not scrub it. Keep it moist by placing it back in the socket if possible, or storing it in milk or between your cheek and gum. Call our office immediately and come in as soon as you can.
How do I know if my toothache is a dental emergency?
Severe, persistent, or worsening tooth pain — especially when accompanied by swelling, fever, or sensitivity to pressure — should be treated as an emergency. These symptoms can indicate an abscess or infection that may spread if left untreated. Mild sensitivity that comes and goes may be less urgent, but if you’re in significant pain or unsure, call our office and we’ll help you determine the appropriate next step.
Does Toothology Dental see emergency patients who aren't current patients?
Yes — we welcome emergency patients regardless of whether you’ve been to our office before. If you’re in pain and need care, call us. We’ll do our best to get you seen the same day, evaluate your situation, and provide the relief you need. Many emergency patients become long-term patients at Toothology Dental after experiencing the level of care and attention Dr. Gorgan provides.
